Bali’s Waterfalls, and Which Ones Are Worth the Drive
Tegenungan, twenty minutes from Ubud, has 38,020 Google reviews. The eight northern waterfalls in this guide have 9,903 between them, and they are the better water.
Bali's waterfalls split almost perfectly by latitude, and the split is not about quality. This guide holds 22 of them. The fourteen in the south — Tegenungan, Tibumana, Kanto Lampo, the Gianyar belt — average 4.56 and carry 71,203 Google reviews between them. The eight in the north, around Singaraja and Munduk, average 4.64 and carry 9,903. Tegenungan on its own has 38,020, which is nearly four times the entire north.
That is a driving-time gap being reported as a popularity gap. The southern falls are twenty minutes from a flat white; the northern ones are two hours of mountain road each way. Nothing else about them differs, except this: four waterfalls in the guide are rated 4.8 and three of them — Banyumala, Banyu Wana Amertha and Nungnung — are on the far side of that drive, and two of those three carry no review count at all.
Sekumpul and Banyumala are the two worth building a day around. Aling-Aling has the jumps and the slides if that is your thing, and a guide is compulsory for the upper falls whether or not you want one. In the south, Kanto Lampo is the clearest example of what volume does to a place: 4.3 across 7,370 reviews, the third busiest waterfall here and the joint lowest rated of the twenty-two.
Leave at six anyway. Only seven of the seventeen with published hours are open by seven, but the opening time is not what decides your morning — the road is. Every one of these is doable as a day trip from the south, and almost none of them is pleasant after nine.
